Wear sleeveless and short sleeve clothes confidently after arm lift surgery. If you have lost weight or your skin is showing signs of age, you might go to great lengths to hide the shape of your arms in social situations. Perhaps you wish you could wear short sleeves and tank tops, but you feel self-conscious about sagging skin on your upper arms.

Some women cover themselves up, even if they are at the beach! The upper arm issue they’re trying to camouflage is also referred to as “bat wings.”

Regain youthful body contours

Dr. Tutino is among the top plastic surgeons in Ontario with more than a decade of experience. Every day he helps men and women like you regain more youthful body contours with arm lift surgery.

Massive weight loss and ageing are two factors that typically cause “bat wings.” This unfortunate nickname describes the loose, wrinkled upper arm skin, which is often most visible when arms are extended. Your arms may appear disproportionately broad or look out of place with the rest of your physique. Unfortunately, no amount of exercise or diet can eliminate the problem of skin laxity.

If you’ve maintained a healthy figure, but your upper arms affect your confidence, speak with Dr. Tutino about arm lift surgery.

Also known as “Brachioplasty,” an arm lift surgery can help remove excess fat and skin from your arms, revealing a slimmer, smoother appearance with a discrete incision placed on the inner arm.  Dr. Tutino will work with you to address irregularities in texture and tone that concern you most.

What Is Arm Lift Surgery?

An arm lift surgery is designed to remove sagging skin and excess fat from your upper arm to help bring the entire arm into proportion. As a bonus, eliminating constant worry over hiding your arms could significantly improve your body confidence.

Depending on your unique situation, you may choose a mini arm lift or an extended arm lift. Dr. Tutino may also suggest arm liposuction as part of your cosmetic surgery based on your desired outcome. He will take the time to thoroughly explain both popular techniques to make the best decision for you.

Considerations Before Planning An Arm Lift Surgery

There are several vital things to consider before you proceed with plastic surgery of any kind. Dr. Tutino has his patient’s best interests at heart, and he always advises them according to their specific needs. Dr. Tutino will examine your arms during your initial consultation, and he may determine that you don’t have enough excess skin on your upper arm to warrant surgery. In this case, he could suggest other means of achieving your goals.

For those who are not ideal Brachioplasty candidates, resistance training to increase muscle can help reduce arm fat and improve overall form. Arm liposuction without skin removal is also a less invasive option that suits some patients.

Health considerations before elective surgery include any heart or respiratory condition, certain chronic illness, or medications. Dr. Tutino will review your medical history with you to reduce any unnecessary risks.

FAQ - top Arm Lift questions

How does an arm lift help me?

Bat wings aren’t just a problem for people with excess weight. The reason is that with age, your skin gets lose and loses some of its elasticity, and this creates excess bags under your arms. If you have lost a significant amount of weight or your weight fluctuates, you might see this too, and this is where an arm lift by Dr. Tutino might be the answer. It creates better contours, gets rid of the extra skin and fat.

What can you expect from the procedure?

If you have an arm lift, it means you will have to go under general anesthesia. Dr. Tutino will explain everything to you in the prior consultations. He will make an incision near your armpit and remove some fat to give your arm a more contoured look. He might also take some skin and fat from the top of your arm. The arm lift plastic surgery usually lasts for about three to four hours. After the surgery, Dr. Tutino will give you a compression garment to wear.

Why doesn’t liposuction fix the problem?

If you have baggy skin under your arms, but the fat keeps it tight, you could opt for a combination of an arm lift and liposuction. But for most patients who present with bat wings, Dr. Tutino recommends an arm lift as the ideal solution. Patients ask for liposuction as there is no scarring. There is a scar with an arm lift, although Dr. Tutino makes sure it is as hidden as possible. Also, there is no telling if the scar will migrate or not. But even after all of that, people still appreciate the results of an arm lift.

What questions should I ask my plastic surgeon about arm lift surgery?

Make sure that you discuss the following things with your plastic surgery consultant. Dr. Tutino discusses them all with his patients in detail.

  • Are you certified by the Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • Were you specifically trained in the field of plastic surgery?
  • How many years of plastic surgery training have you had?
  • Do you have your facility? Do you have hospital privileges to perform this procedure? If so, at which hospitals?
  • Am I a good candidate for this procedure?
  • What will be expected of me to get the best results?
  • What surgical technique is recommended for me?
  • How long of a recovery period can I expect, and what kind of help will I need during my recovery?
  • What are the risks and complications associated with my procedure?
  • How are complications handled?
  • How can I expect my arms to look over time?
  • What are my options if I am dissatisfied with the cosmetic outcome of my arm lift?
  • Do you have before-and-after photos I can look at for this procedure, and what results are reasonable for me?
Who is a good candidate for arm lift surgery?

Make sure that you fall under the criteria of a good candidate includes people who have a significant amount of fat and skin under their arms. Dr. Tutino will evaluate your case and recommend further steps. If you don’t have a high accumulation of skin and fat in your arms, Dr. Tutino might recommend arm liposuction.

How is Brachioplasty ( arm lift surgery) done?

The techniques and steps depend on various factors. For example, if you don’t have a lot of excess skin and fat under your arms, arm liposuction might suffice. But if there is excess skin and fat, then Dr. Tutino will have to make an incision. The size of the incision will, again, depend on the amount of skin to be removed. If the incision is small, it can be hidden in the armpit, but it will be under the arm if the incision is large.

How long should I wait to rejoin my everyday life after the arm lift surgery?

Right after the arm lift surgery, you should do nothing but rest. Dr. Tutino advises his patients not to use their arms at all. After 10 to 15 days, you can start getting back to your routine if everything goes well. Dr. Tutino will tell you when you are ready to exercise or lift heavy objects.

Are there going to be visible scars?

The scars will depend on the size of the incision. If it is small, the scar can be hidden in the armpits and will be easily hidden. But if you need more skin to be removed, Dr. Tutino will have to make a larger incision; this means the scar wile of the same size. The scar will be thin, and Dr. Tutino will try his best to hide it as much as possible. Usually, an incision heals in about a year. So, don’t worry if the scar is visible during this time. But there are certain things you can do to make it heal quicker.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
  • Use sunscreen or silicone patches.
  • Use a special cream for scars.
When can I see the final results?

Once the swelling and inflammation begin to subside, you will start to see the shape of your arm. In about six months from the surgery, you e to see what the final result will look like.

How to sleep after an arm lift surgery?

Instead of sleeping on the stomach or your side, you should make sure to sleep on your back. To increase your comfort, please some pillows beside you and prop your arms on them. Dr. Tutino will guide you on how long you should do that.

Removing skin excess can help show off body contours that more accurately reflect the vitality and fitness patients feel inside.

learn about arm lift at our state-of-the-art cosmetic surgery centre in oakville & mississauga

Who Is the ideal candidate for Brachioplasty? An ideal candidate for arm lift cosmetic surgery is a healthy individual prepared for the temporary but realistic inconveniences of recovery. Cosmetic surgery patients must plan for a short time off work and will need to pause workout schedules or strenuous activity for a limited time.

Good candidates have reached their body weight goals and maintained a stable body mass index for several months, reducing the chance of weight fluctuations.

It is essential to have realistic expectations regarding arm lift scars. Though this contouring procedure can provide beautifully dramatic reshaping, it does so through a long incision placed on the underside of each arm. These are typically discrete and will fade over time. However, a lasting surgical scar is unavoidable.

Dr. Tutino will discuss your goals, pros, and cons and share arm lift before and after photos with you.

How Does An Arm Lift Help?

Arm lift cosmetic surgery can be beneficial for a variety of people. Our skin tends to lose elasticity and tone with age. That means even men and women who never experienced dramatic weight gain might still see their previously smooth arms change form.

Many arms lift patients have fit, strong arm muscles underneath their lax tissue. Removing skin excess can help them show off body contours that more accurately reflect the vitality and fitness they feel inside.

Scarring Is Only Visible When You Lift Your Arm

A common concern regarding arm lift surgery is the placement of scars. Patients want to know how visible the scars will be after the surgeon has removed skin and fat from their upper arms. Dr. Tutino always ensures that incisions are the shortest possible and placed inconspicuously.

As a leading microsurgery expert, he brings that precision and artistry to his ideal incision placement. His satisfied patients can wear tank tops, short sleeves and swimwear with confidence, knowing that signs of a procedure will only show when lifting their arms. For many, this trade-off is well worth their satisfaction with the results.

arm lift- plastic surgery by dr. tutino

If you have minimal excess loose skin, Dr. Tutino might recommend limited arm lift plastic surgery.

learn about arm lift at our state-of-the-art cosmetic surgery centre in oakville & mississauga

Limited Arm Lift (limited Brachioplasty)

If you have minimal excess loose skin, Dr. Tutino might recommend limited arm lift plastic surgery. This procedure utilizes an incision is made entirely within the armpit. Dr. Tutino removes the excess skin and fat through this well-hidden scar. Once the surgery is complete, he will anchor the incision to the underlying armpit tissue, ensuring that the scar does not migrate. Although this method reduces the visibility of the scar, the amount of lift that is achieved is subtle.

Short-Scar Arm Lift

If you have mild upper arm tissue laxity, Dr. Tutino might recommend a short-scar arm lift. This method utilizes a T-shaped incision combined with a short incision on the upper arm.

Extended Arm Lift (extended Brachioplasty)

An extended arm lift surgery is meant to treat moderate to severe excess skin and fat on the upper arm. Through a more extensive incision, the circumference of the arm is visibly reduced. The extended incision runs from the armpit to the elbow. This method can be ideal for those with substantial skin laxity due to weight loss or ageing.

L-Brachioplasty (L-Arm Lift)

For those concerned with severe loose skin and excess fat, Dr. Tutino may recommend an L-Brachioplasty.

Because undergoing gastric bypass surgery or achieving massive weight loss through other methods often results in body-wide tissue laxity, the L-shaped approach can address chest and armpit tone along with the arms.

After your consultation, you may choose to have a combination of body lift surgeries, including the L-arm lift, for a whole-body makeover.

Important Arm Lift Surgery Considerations

There are potential risks to be aware of for any surgery. These may include:

  • Infection
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Numbness

Additional aesthetic issues may pose a concern, such as:

  • Skin tightness
  • Unsightly scarring

Dr. Tutino ensures his patients have specific instructions for scar treatment to heal and fade as quickly as possible. He also follows up closely and is personally accessible for all patients before and after surgery. That means you can expect optimal safety and peace of mind throughout your experience.

Why Doesn’t Liposuction Fix Arm Sagging?

The answer is a very individual and personal one. Many people have a combination of factors to consider. For instance, arm fat may fill out and smooth overlying skin so when it is removed, the remaining skin doesn’t bounce back firmly.

Some people have minimal arm fat, and they don’t realize that the appearance of their arms is related to skin laxity. In many cases, more than one treatment can combine for the best overall results.

If you have a firm, elastic skin tone and wish to remove fat only, Dr. Tutino will be happy to provide arm liposuction information.

How to Prepare for An Upper Arm Plastic Surgery

Dr. Tutino will personally walk you through each aspect of your procedure and recovery to prepare for your experience.

Most cosmetic surgeons perform Brachioplasty as an outpatient procedure. That means you can return home to recover on the same day as your procedure.

Dr. Tutino’s state-of-the-art surgical facility is equipped with beautifully designed recovery suites, surgical theatres, and advanced technology. His experienced staff includes anesthesiologists and nurses who specialize in the exciting field of cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Tutino will be with you through each step of planning, procedure, and follow-up visits while you watch your new shape take form.

What to Wear
Choose clothes for the day of surgery that is easy to take off and put on. Pull-on pants and slip-on shoes, as well as a button-down or zip-up top, are ideal.

Food and Drink
If you are undergoing general anesthesia, you are advised to stop eating and drinking by midnight the night before. It can be helpful to have light snacks and pre-made meals ready at home for the days following surgery.

Dr. Tutino will advise you about any medication you take which should be discontinued before surgery. Examples include anti-inflammatory medications, aspirin, multi-vitamins, or other supplements you take.

Prescriptions for chronic conditions may have to be adjusted before the surgery. Dr. Tutino will give you clear instructions about using medicines before and after the plastic surgery procedure.

Pre-Op Lifestyle Changes

If you smoke, you will be asked to stop at least a month before the surgery. Smoking affects your circulation and healing potential, plus it may increase the risk of respiratory or cardiovascular complications. The usual period is four weeks, but Dr. Tutino might extend this depending on your condition.

If you have weight fluctuation problems, you should wait until your weight becomes stable before surgery. You can ensure a stable weight through regular exercise and a proper nutrition plan. Dr. Tutino will advise you about a nutritious diet and activities that might help you.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

Before your arm lift
Dr. Tutino’s caring nurses will assess your vital signs before the surgery. If you are going under general anesthesia, Dr. Tutino’s anesthesiologist will come to discuss the process and review any risks involved. There may be additional paperwork to sign.

During the Surgery
Dr. Tutino will draw guidelines on your arms before surgery. When you are completely asleep, preparation, incisions, tissue removal and careful, meticulous suturing will begin; Dr. Tutino can complete the entire procedure within 2-3 hours.

After the Surgery
You will awaken in a comfortable recovery suite under a nurse’s care. The time required for patients to recover from anesthesia will be between 1 - 2 hours in most cases. When you are stable and feeling well enough, you may leave with a family member, friend or nurse to take you home and stay with you for the first day.

The recovery for an arm lift is not usually described as very painful, but the necessary limitations on arm use while you heal can be challenging if you’re unprepared. You are advised to elevate your arms at night and at times throughout the day.

Most people benefit from having help with housework, childcare, and meal preparation for a week or two after surgery. You’ll be asked to avoid using your arms to lift, push and pull as much as possible. If you like to work out at the gym, you can likely return to light exercise three weeks post-surgery.

Healing Process
Your arms may appear bruised and swollen in the weeks following surgery. A compression garment is usually worn day and night after an arm lift to help reduce swelling fast and conform tissues to their new shape. Dr. Tutino will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable.

Maintaining Lasting Results
If you want to maintain the results of your arm lift procedure for a long time, you’ll benefit from a stable weight that doesn’t fluctuate.

A regular exercise routine, avoiding sun exposure on scars and a generally nutritious diet can keep your skin looking youthful and elastic.
